Kayak and Canoe Rentals from GCO
God's Country Outfitters also rents kayaks and canoes for groups and families. Clients may choose a guided excursion with one of our knowledgeable staffers or they may choose to let us recommend some of the beautiful paddling areas in the Uwharrie lakes region and then set them off on their own. Below is a summary of some of the waters that we love to paddle.
Falls Reservoir
This stretch of the Pee Dee River between Badin Lake and Lake Tillery offers some of the most beautiful and pristine flat water paddling in all of NC. The sheer rock banks of the river coming down off the Uwharrie Mountains create a serene paddling environment. Paddlers will encounter waterfalls, imposing cliffs as high as sixty feet, bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, and absolutely no building or development! You can even paddle right up to the bottom of the menacing Falls Dam and stare in awe of the structure that is holding back millions and millions of gallons of water- just feet away from you! The Falls is truly a hidden treasure.
Uwharrie River
A winding and twisting adventure awaits paddlers on the Uwharrie River. Paddlers never know what might be around the next corner. Gentle shoals offer a little excitement with class I and II rapids, depending on water levels. Convenient put in and take out points allow for trips as short as two hours. The more enthusiastic paddler might even choose to do an overnighter, starting in Farmer, NC and ending at the Highway 109 bridge in Eldarado. The Uwharrie is definitely in touch with it's feminine side. It is very sensitive! Sensitive to rainfall totals we mean (please excuse any chauvinistic comments). When rain is good the Uwharrie is great fun. During the dry season however, you may walk as much as you paddle- hence our three star rating. During a storm surge our rating also surges!
City Lake in Albemarle
Thanks to the Albemarle Parks and Recreation Department, City Lake has been restored. What a great place to paddle and enjoy a day in the park with the family. City Lake offers great flat water paddling right in the city limits of Albemarle. It is an ideal place for birthday parties, church outings, or family picnics. For just a tinge of adventure, paddlers can go under the bridge at Hwy. 73 and explore Long Creek. The Lake will even be open for fishing in April of 2005. No motorized boats allowed. Call us for a kayak or canoe and fill it up with fish!
Lake Tillery
While all of Lake Tillery offers great paddling, we are partial to the Morrow Mountain area. GCO can launch the kayaks for you at the Morrow Mountain boat landing. You can then paddle and enjoy the scenery of the mountain. We like to slip back into the mouth of the Uwharrie River, which empties just across from the boat landing. Paddlers can go as far up river as they would like and then turn around for the return trip.
Badin Lake
A true Stanly County gem. Badin Lake still boasts of some of the most pristine and undeveloped shore line of any NC lake. Enjoy a relaxing, quiet paddle while you explore the hiddens coves of the lake.
